ALBUMS OF EDWARD T. MASHITER NÉ HELME
Scope and Content:
Comprises chiefly newscuttings on various subjects, including local news in Surrey and Essex, news of friends and relations, royalty, coaching, hunting (especially the Essex Union Hunt), and the fortunes of Ind, Coope and Company Ltd of Romford, brewers. The cuttings appear in chronological order only from the 1890s, co-inciding roughly with the insertion of folios 1-33, and suggesting that the album in its present form began to be compiled at about that time. Many of the cuttings are un-attributed, but sources include national newspapers and hunting periodicals.

Includes print of an unidentified country house [?Claremont House, Surrey] by T. Allom and M.J. Starling, n.d. (folio 1r);
small print of 'Stoke Lodge, Surrey, Capt. Cooper', engraved by J. Pye, n.d. (folio 1r);
engraving by 'FW' of 'St Andrew's Church, Hornchurch' from the south, cut from an unidentified publication of 30 November 1888 (folio 15v);
photograph [badly faded] of Stoke D'Abernon parish church, Surrey, from the south-east, n.d. (folio 16r);
photograph [faded] of Sir Alexander Cockburn, Lord Chief Justice [died 1880] (folio 18r);
print of 'The Kennels Etc [and] Gatwick House [Great Burstead]. P.A.W Carnegy Esq M.F.H', [c.(1880-1891), for another copy of which see I/Mb 34/1/16] (folio 26v);
photograph [faded] of The Bury, King's Walden, Hertfordshire, n.d. (folio 27r);
article by 'Falcon' on 'Hunting Centres: The Essex Union', extracted from an unidentified publication, illustrated with small wood engravings of the High Street 'Billericay', 'The Clock House, Lit[tle] Burstead', and 'The Lion Gates Thorndon Park' [West Horndon], drawn by A. Quinton and engraved by J. Swain, n.d. [late 19th century] (folio 30r);
biographical article, with wood engraving, of the Ven. Henry Walker Yeoman, Archdeacon of Cleveland, Yorkshire, cut from an unidentified publication [c.(1883-1897)] (folio 33v);
article on floods at Romford, illustrated with 3 wood engravings, cut from an unidentified publication, n.d. [?1885] (folios 41v, 42r);
printed 'abstracts of log' of RMS Brittanic and RMS Germanic for Mashiter's voyages to and from America, 1896 (folio 43r);
2 printed photographs of the Essex Union foxhounds, cut from unidentified publications, 1898 (folios 50v, 51r);
3 photographs apparently of puppy judging at the kennels of the Essex Union Hunt, Great Burstead, 1900 (folios 58r, 59r);
ink sketch of a man mounted on a donkey, headed 'No. 125 / Views in Essex' and subscribed 'To Mrs Mashiter of Hornchurch Lodge, county of Essex / This sketch of a neighbour / is most respectfully dedicated by her most obed[ien]t and very humble servant Robert Snooks R.A.', the sketch being signed 'Snooks fec[i]t 1838' (folio 64v).
[The sketch is a pastiche, and Snooks is imaginary; the erased publisher's name 'Thos. Helme & Co, St Paul's Churchyard' may suggest the true authorship. The dedicatee is presumably Betsy Mashiter née Parker (1798-1860), the wife of Thomas Mashiter (1779-1862) of Hornchurch Lodge, whose estate and surname Thomas Helme was to inherit.]
